Like a sport, or any profession becoming good or even the best relies on practice. Even if you only wish to play in a non-professional, social setting with a few friends, it would be nice still to win more often. You can't win if you don't have a go and practice.
Invite friends around to play Poker with you for fun, for fake or play money (to soften the blow of losing :) ). Make a night of it and enjoy playing with the people you know.
Head out to the nearest Casino or Poker Club and try your hand at the low tables there, perhaps taking some friends with you. Have fun, but remember,there you will be playing for real money (however low) and should be aiming to be disciplined, alert and wanting to win.
In my experience, free software was how I developed my current skills (which still need improvement) at poker and good software that can be played anywhere is a top way to practice. Head to the free poker software section and download some games to try out.
